Matt was looking at the┬ huge controversy in Atlanta caused by a speech made there on Tuesday by┬ "The Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan" (Matt has time on his hands he is uploading huge Tiff files to some of our clients in Germany taking 2 hours to go) . So to pass that time he checks in the library...... then takes it upon himself to send me this picture........ one I made a couple of years back. So here it is. Louis Farrakhan in the garden of his home in Phoenix Arizona.┬

Louis Farrakhan........... how shall I put this.......┬ er .............. is not really my kind of a guy......... he has pretty grim views and beliefs.

He has been┬ labeled by some "The Black Hitler" because of his anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist┬ remarks in his speeches. He thinks white people were created by an evil scientist known as Yakub. Its all pretty weird stuff.

Yesterday in┬ Atlanta for his day of atonement speech he said:

"Diddy might have his own clothing line and a Manhattan address, but blacks are moving into prison at four times the rate of blacks in South Africa during the apartheid era,".............. "Tiger Woods' face might be on every billboard, but 340,000 blacks are homeless in America on any given night."

"Politics and the racial environment is threatening the human family,".............. "But black males, in particular, are endangered. Our attitudes, our ignorance, our savagery are all lending to a plan ÔÇö a conspiracy to make the black man, not endangered, but extinct. ... If God doesn't intervene, we will be extinct."

These speeches are a peculiar mix of black empowerment, motivational speaking and weird religious stuff, but his┬ oratory has a powerful effect on his followers. Yesterday's speech was a typical two and a half hours long. Mind you...... He was actually thought to be in retirement till yesterday.......... so his speeches are now rare..

For the image above......... Id flown to Phoenix to do this portrait for the Sunday Times Magazine (UK) but I was told :..... "he does not pose for portraits"........ by his body guards ............ so I had to shoot this while he walked past me to his waiting motorcade. Luckily for me he is pretty elderly these days so he was not moving extremely rapidly.

Its not that great............... but its not so bad either.......... when you think he passed through the lighting set up in a couple of seconds......... its shot on 35mm E6 tranny Provia/RDP 100 (slide) Film.
