"If you ever find yourself disoriented, dislocated, not quite sure of your place, of your creative place, read T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets. After 9/11, after finding myself as a ground zero residence, it became my practice to carry the poem in my pocket and to read it out loud while I was riding the subway. I know this makes me sound mad, like a crazy person but in my disorientation it was the right thing to do. I needed to hear a poet who had been through this despair, this darkness, this disorientation, and this poem was a utter source of comfort for me." — Mako Fujimura, artist (painter) and founder of the International Arts Movement (fyi, he's also the featured artist at Duke's Poetry and Music Festival tonight --- a festival where artists interpret poems through images and music compositions).

Thanks Amin.... I can distinctly remember making this picture New Yorkers were just starting to come down to witnessthe remains themselves people were milling about but almost silently... This is first made of fujichrome 100... Cheers Jez XX

It is amazing, and moving... I was living in the UK back then. Had a photo of the New York City skyline at night on my flat's living room wall. It was so hard to look at, knowing how it had changed in just a few minutes.

6 weeks earlier I had rented a fantastic apartment in Brooklyn Heights with an amazing view of the city dominated by the twin towers ... It was a fantastic optimistic time I had just moved to the US and already picked up amazing assignments.... The view made me catch my breath and laugh out loud.... When I returned after the attack to see the still smoldering ruins I felt the sadness and tragedy of this terrible crime... And the overwhelming sense of absence that the missing towers left... Full in the knowledge that thousands of innocents and heroes had died... In that dark time I bonded with the city and totally admired it's people... I lived close to a mosque... I never once saw any graffiti or saw any menace or hostility to the Muslims worshiping there...... they were of course New Yorkers too.... People can make what they will of the US response to this attack ... But the city of New York shone as the mighty embodiment of the modern world..... open decent and free........ still welcoming and open to all....... even though it was wounded and hurting beyond endurance....

It brings back just how awful the atrocity. Though I don't feel the world was different... people care- but it gave Bush & Blair the opportunity to tighten the noose, to lie and launch their disastrous unwinnable wars like kings, killing so many more innocent people, so much death, so many more enemies (though don't forget the profit flow). At the soldiers funerals here in the UK, as people stop and line the streets almost no one wants these wars to continue. Always someone's son mother brother.... how many more will have to suffer? How many more will have to die?

I so want to write something about this picture, but the words won't come. Still feels very raw, even in the UK, we must never forget and never think it can never happen again. The aftermath lives on forever. Jez, your picture brings it home in stark, scary reality.

Hi Jez,
I remember we met in London at the time it was all happeninghaving coffee and you were stuck in London because the airports were closed and people were calling asking to you to go down there and you were just stuck on the other side of the pond !
I haven't been to New York since, I was there that year about 9 months before it all happened . I will visit ground zero next year.

Id forgotten that you were around till now Bill....... Its was a weird time......it was roll reversall for me ..... I was going crazy..... previously people have normally experienced major news events down the TV I have been there..... on this occaission all sorts of people I knew and their kids and everybody was there...... I was watching on the TV!!

The towers were a symbol of one thing before, and now symbolise another more potent thing. Any pre 9/11 movie scene where they feature, now causes a gasp
"oh The Towers".
Your photograph definitely encapsulates our feelings on that day when we all felt we were New Yorkers too.

Yes the Towers belong to a more optomistic time....... but when you see them up...... you always think of their destruction........ they now symbolize their own demise...... sadly I find it impossible to see them standing without thinking of the day they where destroyed.......... The day everyone was a New Yorker.
